In the gospel, Jesus gives a command. “As I have done for you, you should also do.” What did he do? A disgusting, humiliating task assigned to the lowest of slaves. He washed the dirty feet of the disciples. He said to them, and he says to me and you. “As I have done, you should also do.” You should give your life over to another out of love, even if that means performing the lowest, most humiliating task. You should become washers of dirty feet.

‘ “I need to find a place to live.” Not surprisingly, this is a common request from the homeless people I meet with at Strong Life Rescue Mission each Wednesday. In my response, I look for a little step the person can take. My follow-up goes something like this. “Do you have a job or source of income?” I’m looking but no one will hire me because I lost my social security card. “I can take you to the Social Security office and get you a replacement.” They need an ID. How to change regular waiting into holy waiting
I volunteer as a case manager at a Strong Life Rescue Mission one day a week. The non-profit assists the homeless with their basic needs. One of my assignments is to help them acquire proper identification and a social security card. These are often the first steps to help a person transition from homelessness into a job and ultimately find adequate housing. As such, I frequent the DMV and the Social Security offices, two governmental agencies synonymous with long waits. I sometimes wait for an hour or more.
